Research

The Laboratory of Molecular Microbiology (LMM) at Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre is a section of the Department of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre is a large public teaching hospital in Madrid. It belongs to the National Public Health System and is the main clinical institution of the Universidad Complutense Medical School. The scientific activity of the LMM is focused on viral pathogenesis especially on HIV and Ebola virus infection.

The LMM is also responsible of the virological follow up of HIV-infected patients referred to the hospital (1800 outpatients within regular follow up) and centralizes molecular virology studies of several clinical trials with antiretroviral drugs. The LMM is currently involved in the study of the interaction of envelope glycoproteins of different viral agents (HIV, Ebola and Marburg virus) with receptors and attachment factor on the cell surface. Specifically we are interested in the mechanism and biological relevance of the interaction of HIV and Ebola virus with C-type lectins, such as DC-SIGN and DC-SIGNR, on the surface of dendritic and endothelial cells.
